Knewe™ Products in Dairy Nutrition

Knewe™ products are produced from distiller's co-products by a patented process. This process uses mineral compounds to react with components of the distiller's co-products, making the minerals much more bioavailable. We have conducted two commercial trials:

• Knewe™ Mg was tested in an autumn-calving Southland dairy herd, compared to wheat plus magnesium oxide. Although only half the standard supplemental magnesium was fed each day, magnesium deficiency symptoms remained very low. Cows fed 400g/day of Knewe™-Mg, plus silage and some wheat, produced, on average, 2 litres/day (8%) more than the cows receiving the standard diet of silage, wheat and Magox, with the same solids production. Mineral balance results strongly suggested this was due to more efficient feed utilisation. The increased production was equivalent to extracting nearly 31MJ/day more energy from the cow's total diet.
• Knewe™-Mg DDGS was tested in a spring-calving herd. 1 kg/day of this product was fed, in conjunction with pasture and rolled wheat, to provide the same magnesium supplement level as a forage/wheat/Magox control diet. No adverse effects were found. Cows produced about 3% more milk, but 10% more solids. In this case, the increased production was equivalent to extracting an extra 54 MJ/day from the total diet.
